Who Can Request a Certificate?

Who may request a certificate depends on the type of record:

For a birth certificate: the person named on the record, if aged 16 or over, or a parent of a child under 16
For a marriage certificate: either spouse named on the record
For a death certificate: a child, parent, sibling, spouse or common-law partner of the deceased, or a legal representative of the estate

As a matter of our own service policy, our assistance service is currently available only to residents of Canadian provinces other than Quebec. Eligibility to receive the certificate is determined exclusively by the Vital Statistics Branch of Service New Brunswick.
